Dog food for sensitive stomachs and itchy skin: a New Zealand guide

If your dog is scratching through the night, licking their paws raw, or running to the lawn after every meal, food is one of the first things worth looking at. Finding the right dog food for a sensitive stomach in NZ doesn't have to mean endless trial and error. This guide covers the signs to watch for, what to look for on the bag, and how to switch foods without making things worse.

First, is it the food?

Itchy skin and upset tummies have plenty of causes. Fleas, grass and pollen allergies, mites and infections can all look like a food problem. So before you change anything, rule those out with your vet, especially if your dog is losing weight, vomiting often, or has bleeding or broken skin.

Food is a likely suspect when you notice:

  • itching that carries on year-round, not just in spring and summer
  • licking or chewing paws, plus repeat ear infections
  • soft stools, wind or gurgling tummies most days
  • symptoms that started or got worse after a change of food

Why some dogs react to their food

Most food reactions in dogs are to a protein the dog has eaten many times before. That's why the proteins found in most everyday dog foods, such as chicken, beef, dairy and wheat, are among the most common triggers. It isn't that these ingredients are bad. Some dogs simply become sensitive to what they eat every day.

The usual fix is to move to a food built around a protein your dog hasn't had much of, or a recipe with fewer ingredients overall, so there are fewer things to react to.

What to look for on the bag

  • A different main protein. Fish, lamb or salmon are gentle starting points for dogs raised on chicken or beef.
  • A short ingredient list. Fewer ingredients make it easier to work out what suits your dog.
  • Check every protein, not just the first. A "salmon" recipe can still contain chicken fat or chicken meal further down the list.
  • Omega-3s from fish oil, which support skin and coat.
  • Prebiotics or probiotics if loose stools are the main problem.

How to switch foods without upsetting the tummy

Change food gradually over about 7 to 10 days:

  1. Days 1–3: one-quarter new food, three-quarters old.
  2. Days 4–6: half and half.
  3. Days 7–9: three-quarters new.
  4. Day 10: all new food.

If your dog's stomach is very sensitive, take it even slower.

Give it time, and keep it simple

Skin takes weeks to settle, so judge a new food over about 8 weeks, not a few days. During that time, keep treats to ones that match the new food's protein. A single chicken treat can undo a month of careful feeding. Keep a quick note of itching, stools and energy each week, so you can see whether things are improving.

If there's no change after 8 weeks, talk to your vet. They may suggest a prescription diet or testing for other allergies.
